The baby brother of Den Helder. But with its striking red lighthouse, Huisduinen is also great. De Lange Jaap lighthouse is actually the highest cast-iron lighthouse in Europe! Napoleon also saw the power of this coastal town and dubbed it the ‘Gibraltar of the North’. He built Fort Kijkduin here (part of Fortress Den Helder) that still has an underground corridor system. The Fort can be visited every day and houses a unique North Sea aquarium.
Den Helder Online is the site about Den Helder, Julianadorp en Huisduinen. The online platform for everyone: Sightseeing, going out, sailing, food, navy, culture, accommodations and interesting (upcoming) events – you will find what you're looking for!
The inhabitants of Huisduinen once earned their living from whaling, but nowadays it is a residence for the wealthy. Unsurprising, as from the boulevard you have the best view of the North Sea, and there are plenty of hotels, holiday homes and good restaurants here. You can also enjoy some wonderful cycling and hiking routes through the dunes. Den Helder is situated nearby with fun attractions, such as Climbing Park De KlimVallei or Museum Port Willemsoord.
Tip! Be sure to visit Zorgboerderij Tesselaar, the only dairy company in the municipality of Den Helder. In the cheese dairy, cow milk from forty dairy cows on the farm is made into yoghurt and into no less than ten types of cheese.
